What I Read
The miracle is that I finished reading Great Lion of God by Taylor Caldwell! Weighing in at 656 pages, this was a pretty hefty read! Unfortunately, I wasn’t crazy about it. I was expecting more action and adventure, because there is a ton of that in Paul’s life, at least according to the book of Acts. There were definitely some places where it matched up, but I felt there was a lot more extrapolation than was necessary given the amount of source material that wasn’t used. Also, some of it just seemed wrong. Like, there were quotes straight out of his letters, but in the wrong context. It didn’t talk about him writing letters much at all. If you want a better fictionalized version adaptation of St. Paul, I recommend Paul by Walter Wangerin, Jr. To be fair, it’s been many years since I read it, but I remember it as tracking pretty closely what we know from biblical sources.
After finishing, I needed another book for my library challenge, so I started reading Lessons from Madame Chic by Jennifer L. Scott. So far this one seems ok, not great, but it was already on my Kindle and fit the category of a book taking place in France. I’ll try to pick something better for the next one.
In other reading, I’m still working on London Uncovered by Mark Daley and The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis, although I’m almost finished with the latter. I’m also still tracking with my Bible reading plan.
What I Watched
I hadn’t watched the latest episode of The Testaments last week, so I caught up with the two new ones. I also watched a ton of Gilmore Girls this week. I’m now into season five. I also have a brand new one to report. On Paramount+ I watched the whole series of Can You Keep a Secret? This is a short series with just six episodes of about thirty minutes each, so I was able to watch the entire thing over the weekend. It’s a British series starring Dawn French, whom I enjoyed in The Vicar of Dibley, so I had to check this one out, and it turned out to be really funny! Very British, if that’s something you like. Or something you don’t.
Meanwhile, I added two new shows to my list, courtesy of my daughter, home from college for the summer. The first, which she’s been watching in the living room, is called Superstore. It’s a comedy about employees at a big box store that looks suspiciously like Walmart. Then, she told me that Amazon Prime had made a We Were Liars series. I read the book a few years ago, and the prequel more recently, so I’m interested to see how they adapted it into a series. As I was writing this, I realized there is actually a third book that I think I read in the last year or so.
What I Listened To
Alas, nothing new to report here. I listened to my usual lineup of podcasts, although I’m a little behind because I spent less time in the car last week. I should catch up soon, though.
Well, what about you? What kinds of media have you been consuming lately? Does summer, or other factors, throw a wrench into your routine too? Leave a comment, and let’s chat!
