Media Monday – June 2 (Extra-long Edition!)

Argh! I know, I missed last week! I thought maybe I’d just do it Tuesday, then that didn’t happen, and after about Wednesday I figured it was too late! So today you’re getting two weeks worth of media consumption!

What I Read

Finally some progress to report here! I finished Defiant: What the Women of Exodus Teach Us About Freedom by Kelly Nikondeha. This one was really good. She tells the story of Exodus through the eyes of the women, using biblical and extra-biblical sources, as well as her own imagination to give a peek into their stories. Each chapter was centered around a particular aspect of justice using the stories from the Bible, modernity, and the author’s own life. Definitely recommended.

I also finished Rez Life by David Treuer. I know this one kind of took me forever to read, but it wasn’t really because I didn’t like it. Part history and part memoir, macro and micro, I could tell it was all deeply personal to the author. I definitely learned from reading this. It was also somewhat difficult to read as the author skipped around without any real narrative flow. At the same time, it also wasn’t just a series of individual stories either. Everything interconnected, but it didn’t fit neatly into a book format. Still, with all its difficulty, I found it worth reading. Kind of like, glad I read it, and glad I’m finished with it.

For my new spiritual book, I picked And It Was Good by Madeleine L’Engle. The author is known for her fiction books, particularly her children’s fiction, but this is the first in a trilogy of essay collections she wrote about the book of Genesis. It’s so interesting to see the theology that she weaved into her fiction, even children’s books. I bought the third book for $4.99, which I seldom do, and hoping that the second comes down to that price or lower by the time I’m ready to read it, which will likely be when I finish this one.

My next library challenge category is “It Had to Be You,” a book where two enemies fall in love. For this one, I picked Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. I keep hearing about this series, and it was one recommended on the library’s list. So far so good – it’s about a girl competing to be a dragon rider, except that she’s completely unqualified and physically unsuited for it. Also, she’s in love/crush with her childhood best friend, who is also her squad leader, but based on the category recommendation, I’m sure she’s going to end up with his superior, the wing leader whose father led a rebellion and was killed by her mom, the general. Frankly, at my age, I’m kind of eye rolling at all the drama, but it is nice and juicy. Luckily, I was able to check this one out for three weeks, because it’s also a thick one.

What I Watched

Things are also getting more interesting here! I did indeed watch some more Seinfeld. Actually, I finished the series. I’m taking a little bit of a break for a minute, but, honestly, I think I’m alright with just starting back at the beginning as soon as I feel like some more snarky comedy.

In other watching news, hubby and I finished House of David! There’s supposed to be a second season in production, which is exciting. Plenty more drama to come! We’re also looking forward to the next season of The Chosen being released later this month.

Plus, I started a new to me show – Grosse Pointe Garden Society! Talk about juicy – it’s about a quartet of unlikely friends in a snooty gardening club who are somehow involved in a murder. The best part is, we’re not sure how, or even who the murder victim is! They all have some troubled relationships in their lives, so you could see each of them potentially snapping and killing someone, but how are all of them involved? The show seesaws between the time just after the murder (and cover-up) and the “present,” which is counting down the big night. I have to confess, I started this one because I had kept seeing ads for it while I was watching The Office, but it’s turning out to be a lot of fun.

Last – I told you things were more interesting – I’ve also watched a few episodes each of Gilmore Girls and Anne with an “E” on Netflix. I’m on the last season of Anne, but that one can get kind of heavy. I also watched the first episode of Prison Break. I don’t have a strong opinion about this one yet, so will probably watch more at some point, but right now I’m all about Grosse Pointe.

What I Listened To

Alright, this is the category where not much has changed. I’ve still got the same regular lineup of podcasts, with Crafty Ass Female backlog as my fill in. In audiobooks, Taste: My Life Through Food is still first in the queue, although I haven’t done a ton of listening lately. I moved to a new program at work, so still trying to get my bearings there.

Phew! I think I’m over double my usual post length, although I guess that’s somewhat appropriate since I’m covering double the time. It’s nice to have some new media to get excited about. What about you? Are you reading, watching, listening to, or otherwise consuming anything new? Let me know in the comments!
