More What I Watched
I forgot the most important one this week! I finished watching Anne With an E! I generally enjoyed the show, although I get the complaints about it. At first, I kind of liked that they brought in some kind of serious topics using Anne’s past. I have no doubt that an orphan of that time who had passed through multiple families and group homes had experienced abuse of varying degrees.
I do think it got too heavy-handed when they started bringing in modern social issues, and there are two reasons I don’t like it. First, artistically. They have one issue juxtaposing a very serious issue like the First Nations schools in Canada with the usual Avonlea hijinks, and it just felt like the show couldn’t decide what it was about. Anne’s antics and chronic bad luck are supposed to make us laugh with her, and that feels strange when we were crying just a moment before. I also really hated that Ka’kwet’s story wasn’t really resolved as the series ended, although it’s probably realistic that her parents really never did see her again.
My second problem is a bit more abstract, but bear with me. I don’t like taking fictional historical characters and pretending that they were more enlightened or modern than the people around them. It’s really just a proxy for saying that we ourselves would have of course been against racial discrimination, fully accepted a gay schoolmate, and advocated for fair treatment of native peoples. Maybe we would, and maybe we wouldn’t. Certainly there were courageous people who went against mainstream thinking and advocated for the rights of people who were considered by most as “other,” and we all imagine ourselves in that role. And there’s nothing wrong with that! By thinking about what it would take to stand up for the rights of others, we start ingraining such attitudes and actions into our characters. I have a lot of jumbled thoughts on this, so I’ll just leave it here for now.
Prime Days
If you’re ever on Amazon, it would be hard to miss that this week was “Prime Day.” (Why don’t they just give in and call it Prime Week, I wonder?) So it’s super last minute, but I thought I’d share the things I purchased this week. I’m working on consuming less, but sometimes a girl does need to buy something! And maybe there’s something you need out there, too!
First up, I bought myself a Colorsoft Kindle! When they first came out, I thought, no way do I need that. I read regular print books like 99% of the time. But, I started seeing people get them, seeing pictures, and they did look pretty cool. When I went online and saw they were $100 off, I couldn’t resist hitting buy. Then, of course, I had to get a case for it.
The next one is a little weird, but it’s one of those things I actually need and was planning to buy anyway. I have a makeup brush that’s falling apart, and I really like the long-handled kabuki style, so thought I’d give this one a try. So far it’s ok; I’m hoping it fluffs out a little more with use, though.
Next was another fun purchase. I saw these layering markers and had to give them a try since I don’t have anything like them. I tried them out in the back of my bullet journal, and they really work! It’s a pretty cool effect, so I’m trying to think of a way to incorporate them into my bujo next month.
Then more utilitarian purchases, I got these moving bags off the Nester’s list. My daughter will be moving into a college dorm next month. I’ve always seen Ikea bags being touted as ideal for students, but these seem even more utilitarian and less brand-y. Then I got this little spray bottle because I bought a little succulent in a cute planter for my work desk, and it’s supposed be “misted” weekly.
Finally, a couple more things that I was going to get anyway: these slippers that I love and some new sunglasses. My old slippers are wearing out, and my sunglasses broke this week. So purchases I was going to make soon no matter what, and might as well get a little bit of a deal.
So I guess this turned out to be kind of a Friday Fave post, too! How about you? Did you get anything special? Let me know!
