Media Monday – September 1

Phew, another Monday already! I really needed a holiday about now!

What I’m Reading

I did finish reading Easy Crafts for the Insane by Kelly Williams Brown. This was kind of interesting – it’s a memoir about the author’s journey through physical and mental health challenges and the crafts she did while experiencing them. In that respect, it reminded me a little of Hooked: A Memoir in Crafts by Sutton Foster. This one was a harder read, though, at least for me, as the author went through a severe mental health crisis that involved a suicide attempt. I did enjoy her outlook on even simple, imperfect crafting as a way to get through the difficult things she experienced. I gave this one three stars.

I’m still working on We Solve Murders by Richard Osman, although I’m almost done. This is a fun one, in a similar vein as his more well-known book The Thursday Murder Club. My last category is a book found on display at the library. In support of this, I made a trip to the library this week, and was thrilled to find they had a display of books about books, which is right up my alley! I think I want to go with How Can I Help You by Laura Sims, but the wait time for it is a couple of months. We’ll see if I can hold out for it…

I’m also still plugging away on The Politics of Jesus by John Howard Yoder as my current spiritual book. It’s interesting, but very dense with a lot of footnotes.

What I’m Watching

I’ve mostly re-watched Stranger Things this week, and I finished season 4 today. I think I may take a little break for a bit now, because I’ve got plenty of time before the next season comes out. Also, part 2 of season 2 of Wednesday is coming out this week, so I’ll want to catch that soon. Then, the next season of Only Murders in the Building will be out next week, which I’m sure will be a must-see for me! I hope they make good on the “plot holes” that Saz found before she was killed.

Speaking of murders, though, I did find time to watch The Thursday Murder Club on Netflix! For some reason, I had been expecting this to be a short series, but it turned out to be an approximately two hour movie. I enjoyed it, though, and it felt true to what I remembered of the book. Maybe they’ll do the rest of the series as well.

What I’m Listening To

After writing about it last week, I guess I had convinced myself that I really should go ahead and bite the bullet and listen to Outlander by Diana Gabaldon on Audible! It’s over 30 hours, but it’s going well so far.

In podcast land, I’m still listening to my usual lineup, except that I’ve started listening to the Organize 365 podcast as my filler.

Since it’s a holiday and I have a little extra time today, I’m going to start making good on something I said I would do a while back and tell you a little more about one of the podcasts I regularly listen to. I use Pocket Casts (no affiliation, just a user) to subscribe to podcasts, and I arrange them by day released and, for ones that come out on the same day, alphabetically. So, every Monday the first one I listen to is Best Laid Plans hosted by Sarah Hart-Unger. This is a podcast about planning and “planning-adjacent” topics. There is a lot of discussion about physical and digital planners and tools, as well as things like goal-setting, meal planning, guests, and more. I’m pretty set in my bullet journaling ways for now, but I still enjoy the more conceptual planning discussion, plus you never know what might change in the future.

So that’s been my week. Busy with a lot of things, but I’ve also been really enjoying the media that I’m consuming lately, so that’s helped me to keep going with my projects. What about you? Do you find it hard to keep being intentional about your consumption in busy times? Let’s chat about what you’re reading, watching, and listening (or not!) in the comments!
